California Hotel & Lodging Association Milestones

    • 1794 – The first U.S. hotel built specifically as a hotel, the 70-room City Hotel on Broadway in New York, opens for business
    • 1859 – The first hotel elevator is installed, in New York City’s six-story Fifth Avenue Hotel, only seven years after being invented
    • 1893 – The Southern California Hotel Association began as a fraternal group for owners and operators to share ideas and socialize
    • 1910 – the American Hotel Association was founded to serve the needs of the lodging industry at the national level. The Southern California Hotel Association joined the national association
    • 1919 – The Northern California Hotel Association helped start the “See America First” advertising campaign
    • 1929 – The first airport hotel opens: the Oakland Airport, operated by the Interstate Company
    • 1946 – The first hotel management contract is signed by Inter-Continental Hotels
    • 1970 – The Southern California Hotel Association and the California State Hotel & Motel Association joined forces to create the California Hotel & Motel Association
    • 1995 – The California Hotel & Motel Association helped pass the California Tourism Marketing Act
    • 2001 – The California and national associations changed their names to the California Hotel & Lodging Association and the American Hotel & Lodging Association, as they are both known today
    • 2004 – The widely successful “We Welcome Service Animals” campaign was created by the California Hotel & Lodging Association Education Foundation
    • 2007 – CHLA and the California Association of Bed & Breakfast Inns (CABBI) announced a merger. CHLA received an ISHAE Award of Excellence in the PR/Communications Program category for the CABBI merger
    • 2008 – CHLA received an ISHAE Award of Excellence in the Events/Fundraising category for its Innspire Conference and Tradeshow
    • 2010 – CHLA received an ISHAE Award of Excellence in the Events/Fundraising category for its Northern California Conference and Tradeshow
    • 2011 – CHLA received an ISHAE Award of Excellence in the Member Programs category for its annual Advocacy Summary
    • 2014 – CHLA received an ISHAE Award of Excellence in the Communications category for its California Lodging News magazine
    • 2015 – CHLA received an ISHAE Awards of Excellence in the Events/Fundraising category for its Hotel Owners Conference
    • 2016 – CHLA received two ISHAE Awards of Excellence, one for its emergency pocket guides and another for its drought water cards
    • 2018 – CHLA worked closely with the President Pro Tempore of the California State Senate, Toni Atkins, on human trafficking awareness training Senate Bill 970, which was signed by the Governor
